High - Latitude Molecular Clouds as γ - ray Sources for GLAST 1
نویسندگان
چکیده
For about two decades, a population of relative small and nearby molecular clouds has been known to exist at high Galactic latitudes. Lying more than 10◦ from the Galactic plane, these clouds have typical distances of ∼150 pc, angular sizes of ∼1◦, and masses of order tens of solar masses. These objects are passive sources of high-energy γ-rays through cosmic ray-gas interactions. Using a new wide-angle CO survey of the northern sky, we show that typical high-latitude clouds are not bright enough in γ-rays to have been detected by EGRET, but that of order 100 of them will be detectable by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on GLAST. Thus, we predict a new steady population of γ-ray sources at high Galactic latitudes, perhaps the most numerous after active galactic nuclei. متن کاملSmall Molecular Clouds at High Latitudes as Gamma-Ray Sources for GLAST
The sensitivity of the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the forthcoming GLAST mission will be so much greater than previous high-energy γ-ray missions that small molecular clouds at intermediate and high Galactic latitudes (|b| > 10) will be detected in the light of diffuse γ-ray emission from cosmic-ray interactions. These clouds are small, typically subtending less than 1 with masses ∼10–100 sol...
متن کاملGravitational lensing as a possible explanation for some unidentified gamma-ray sources at high latitudes
We propose that some of the high-latitude unidentified EGRET γ-ray sources could be the result of gravitational lensing amplification of the innermost regions of distant, faint, active galactic nuclei. These objects have γ-ray emitting regions small enough as to be affected by microlensing of stars in interposed galaxies. We compute the gravitational amplification taking into account effects of...
متن کاملFuture GeV γ-ray Missions and New Discovery Potential
Future GeV γ-ray missions, efforts to improve the diffuse γ-ray emission modeling, and possible exploitation of temporal variability for source characterization are reviewed. GLAST-LAT with its improved point-spread-function is expected to attain mCrab sensitivity, facilitate identification of γ-ray sources with those in other wavelength, and discover new source classes. However these new sourc...
متن کاملObservations of the Isotropic Diffuse Gamma-ray Background with the Egret Telescope
An Isotropic Diffuse Gamma-Ray Background (IDGRB) in the spectral range 3010,000 MeV was first reported in the early 1970’s using measurements made by the SAS 2 instrument. Data recorded by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET ) on board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) over the last 4 years are analysed in order to extract the best measurement yet made of the IDGRB. Exte...
